About Jakob Begun

A Prof Jake Begun completed his MD and PhD in genetics at Harvard Medical School and his gastroenterology training at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is a consultant gastroenterologist at Mater Hospital Brisbane, where he treats adolescent and adult patients with Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He also practices gastroenterology privately at Mater Private Hospital Brisbane.

A Prof Begun is involved in clinical trials and clinical research around the delivery of care. His translational research areas of interest include functional genetics of IBD, the role of innate immunity and the microbiome in IBD pathogenesis with a focus on autophagy, and novel treatments of IBD.

A Prof Begun was appointed Senior Research Fellow in the Immunity, Infection, and Inflammation Program at Mater Research in February 2014, and at the same time received a clinical staff appointment in Gastroenterology at Mater Hospital Brisbane and QEII Jubilee Hospital. He has a basic and translational laboratory at the Translational Research Institute in Brisbane and is the IBD Group leader there.

A Prof Begun has a senior lecturer position in the University of Queensland School of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. In January 2015 he was awarded the University of Queensland Reginald Ferguson Fellowship in Gastroenterology to support his research activity.
